Materials Needed: Water base markers (no sharpies), plastic toys, a hand towel, copy paper, water spritz bottle or sponge and small amount of water.

Student Instructions
Your Challenge: Use plastic toys found in your toy box OR around items around the house to use as printmaking tools. Directions: Gather your materials. Put your paper on top of the hand towel. Lightly spritz or dampen paper with a sponge. Color one side of a plastic toy with a water based marker. Print an impression from the toy on the damp paper. If the paper is too wet the image will blur. When you work, think about… How many times will I print with the same object?… How does the amount of water on my paper change my art?… Will my prints be as clear if I don’t dampen the paper?… Will I draw around my prints when the paper dries? … Will I turn my prints into an image, like a robot or a bug?

Learning Opportunity Objective
I can create a work of art with found objects so that I can learn about new ways to print and create artwork.

Most students are familiar with griddrawingtool.com, as it is used in many art classes. The purpose of using a grid is to ensure correct proportions are used when drawing. Whatever your child's interests are, here are the subjects they should choose from- cars, animals, people, characters, etc. It would be helpful if your child could use the "photos" app on their laptop to convert the images to black and white. This will make it easier to see the values of gray. Your child's teachers will be happy to help with any issues that arise while working with the grid on the website.

Student Instructions
Choose any image you would like to draw and save it to your desktop. It would be helpful to change a color image into black and white before you place a grid on top of it. Go to the URL above. Follow the steps to apply a grid to your image. On a blank sheet of paper, draw the grid with the same number of squares in your image. Use a ruler to ensure your measurements are correct. Then, proceed with drawing in the lines, values, and shapes one box at a time.
Learning Opportunity Objective
Students will use the grid drawing tool for practice in drawing with correct proportions.
Comments
For visual artists, drawing is one of the most essential practices. Everyone from amateurs to pros can develop and strengthen skills through practicing drawing. The use of a grid is a tried and true method of ensuring the use of correct proportions. For advanced artists, consider choosing ONE square from your finished drawing to enlarge to an 8x8 inch square.
