ELA Week 4
Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3

File Submission (if applicable)
Your student will use IXL to practice two skills: B2: Determine the themes of short stories and E4: Interpret figures of speech. Some students have account already set up through their school, but IXL is free to all students during this time, so an account is not necessary. Most students should aim for a SMART score of 80 or higher, but we understand that this is not an appropriate goal for all students. Student in exceptional language arts should attempt to achieve a SMART score of 90. Students who struggle in language arts should stop after 30 minutes even if they have not achieved a score of 80. At the end of the practice session, students should take a screen shot of their final score and email it to their ELA teacher.

Parent Instructions
If you have an IXL account through your school, please log in. Otherwise, you may just go to IXL.com. Click on “Learning” and then “Language Arts.” Under 6th grade, practice the following skills: B2: Determine the themes of short stories and E4: Interpret figures of speech.. Practice each skill until you achieve a SMART score of 80 OR until you have practiced for 30 minutes. Send a screen shot of your final score to your teacher.

Student Instructions
1. After reading a short story, the student will determine the most appropriate theme for the story. 2. Given a sentence using figurative language, the student will give the literal meaning of the sentence.

Learning Opportunity Objective
IXL is able to be customized for students. Exceptional students, for example, may practice the exact same skills at the 7th or even 8th grade level. Please email your ELA teacher with specific questions.

As an extension activity, students can listen to the song, “Puff the Magic Dragon” (file and lyrics are attached) and write a response to the following prompts: 1. How do the two texts convey the idea of “growing up?” Include evidence from both texts in your response. 2. Describe an experience in which you felt you had to grow up. Please note that students may not be able to access the youtube video from their school devices. A pdf of the lyrics are attached to this lesson.

Student Instructions
Greetings Students: For this lesson you will watch the two short videos to review ocean currents and the role of convection. You will examine the affects of wind on surface currents and the effects of water temperature and density (salinity) on deeper water ocean currents. After you view the videos, complete the Pre-Reading. You may also complete the Optional Lab if you so desire. If you do the lab be sure to take a video to share with your science teacher. Lastly, you will read the Enrichment passage and give detailed answers using science terms and concepts to explain your reasoning and justify your claim.
