Have your child listen to "Here Comes the Garbage Barge" by Jonah Winter through Storyline Online.
 
 
Student Instructions
After listening to the story; Here Comes the Garbage Barge, answer the following writing prompt:
What are some ways you can help the Earth?
Write a paragraph: 5-7 sentences. Make sure to include a topic sentence (restate the writing prompt), include a minimum of 3 ways, and a conclusion. Use transition words and linking words throughout your writing. Use a variety of sentence types: simple, compound, and complex sentences.
 
To share your response, log into your SeeSaw through Clever and click the green plus sign to add a note which will allow you to type and post your response to your teacher.

Affix Match

Parent Instructions
1. Print & cut out the affix cards.
2. Review with your child the meaning of each each affix.
3. Mix up the cards and place the face down.
4. Guide your child to select two cards at a time and read them.
5. Allow them to determine if cards show an affix and its meaning (e.g., re-, again). If there is a match, they will pick up those cards and place them off to the side. If cards do not match, they will return cards to their original position.
6. Continue until all matches are formed.
 
 
Student Instructions
1. Mix up the cards and place them face down.
2. Select two cards at a time and read them.
3. Decide if those two cards show match an affix to its meaning (For example, re- matches the meaning again).
4. If there is a match, pick up those cards and place them off to the side. If cards do not match, return cards to their original position.
5. Continue until all matches are made!

Complete the curiosity guide activity as an optional STEAM extension activity.
Feel free to modify the challenge if you do not have the needed materials.
 
There is also a reading passage with questions titled Navigation in the Age of Exploration that explores the history of magnets as well as current uses of magnets in technology that we use in our everyday lives.

As you watch the PBS lesson on magnetism, think about the questions that are asked throughout the lesson. You have learned that forces can include invisible pushes and pulls all around you in the world. During this lesson, you will learn about the invisible forces that act on magnets causing them to push and pull.
 
Read the passage Navigation in the Age of Exploration. Answer the questions using complete sentences and evidence from the passage. 
 
There is an optional STEAM challenge for you to test out magnets on your own.
