Your child will read and annotate the poem "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes. A suggestion that may help with annotation is to read the text dependent questions before reading the poem. This helps set the purpose for reading. Next, they will answer the five text dependent questions that follow and select one discussion question to answer in at least three complete sentences. Your child will submit their completed work according to their ELA teacher's specific directions.

Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an American poet, activist, novelist, and playwright. He is also considered one of the leaders of the Harlem Renaissance, which was the cultural, social, and artistic movement of black artists that took place in Harlem between the end of World War I and the mid-1930s. As you read, take notes on the metaphor and larger message presented in the text (Source: CommonLit).

Students will watch a video on the website Flocabulary to review theme (see link shared above). Afterwards, they will complete the 7th grade IXL lessons B1 and B2 to practice determining theme and quotes that support a theme. Students will use the same login information previously shared by the school and/or other content areas. Most students should aim for a SMART score of 80 or higher. Students in exceptional should attempt to achieve a SMART score of 90 or higher. However, students who struggle with ELA or the theme skill should stop after 30 minutes of practice even if they do not achieve a score of 80. At the end of each lesson, students should screen shot their score and submit it to their ELA teacher per the instructions shared in the weekly email.

Watch the video from Flocabulary on theme as a way to review. https://www.flocabulary.com/unit/theme/ Once finished, login to IXL.com and complete the lessons on theme (B1 and B2). Students should continue to read/listen to audio version of The Giver by Lois Lowry. This week's chapter assignments are chapters 16-20. Attached is a PDF document with two activity options for students to choose from. Option 1 is a "Memory Activity" and option 2 is "A World Without Pain Activity." Both activities require students to answer a few questions after reflecting on a given prompt. Their answers should be typed into a blank Pages or Word document and submitted to their teacher based on directions shared in the weekly email.

Once on the social studies page, they should scroll down to seventh grade and choose to see all 196 skills. Students then scroll down until they see the heading: X. Medieval Asia. Underneath this heading they should complete X1: The Mongol Empire, then go to R. The Silk Road and complete R3: The medieval Silk Road. Students should know their login information but if they have forgotten it they can email their social studies teacher.
