1) Students should log on to readworks.org through Clever. 2) Once inside of readworks.org, search the article, Classical Music: Ludwig van Beethoven. This is a 5th Grade reading passage with an attached question set. Note: If you are unable to access the article through Clever, I have attached a pdf of the article/question set. Student will read the article and complete the question set. 3) This article focuses on finding the main idea(s) of a text. 4) Related vocabulary word: applaud Optional: Share answers on SeeSaw. Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the best composers of all time. When Beethoven was in his late twenties, he began to lose his hearing. This was a devastating experience for him. Incredibly, however, Beethoven’s hearing loss did not stop him from producing some of his finest musical works. We read about hearing loss in Wonderstruck. Students should be able to find connections between Beethoven and one of the characters in Wonderstruck.

SOAPSTone (Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject, Tone) is an acronym for a series of questions that students must first ask themselves, and then answer, as they begin to plan writing pieces. Watch the PBS video, read the article, then complete the SOAPStone graphic organizer. Students will be able to write a three-to four sentence summary analyzing and explaining the main idea of the article "Eyewitness to History: I'm American, No Matter What!

Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in al the beakers were redistributed equally.
 
Comments
Representing and interpreting data on a Line Plot is a supporting standard for 5th Graders. It is directly related to completing operations with Mixed Numbers.

Parent Instructions
Allow students access to a computer to read or Print Studies Weekly, week 7,' Watching the Sky', Moon test, and Moon phase cut out. Students will need the following materials for the Moon phase cut out: assessment paper, blank paper, scissors, glue.
 
Student Instructions
Read the Studies Weekly, week 7, 'Watching the Sky (or use a computer to read), complete the crossword and the Moon test. Then, print Moon phase cut out. You will need blank paper, scissors and glue to complete. Glue the sun on the top/middle of the paper and glue the Earth in the center of the paper. Then, glue the moon phases in the appropriate places around the Earth. Or, if you did not print off, draw the sun, at the top middle of a paper, and the Earth in the center reflecting the correct phases of the moon. Optional: Submit a photo or video to your Seesaw account.

5.ESS1.5 Relate the tilt of the Earth’s axis, as it revolves around the sun, to the varying intensities of sunlight at different latitudes. Evaluate how this causes changes in day-length and seasons.

Question: Imagine that you are Ruby Bridges on the first day of school after desegregation in Louisiana. In a letter to a friend, describe the scene around you as you are escorted through the crowds of protesters to William Frantz Elementary School. What are your thoughts and feelings as you realize that you are the only student in your class? Why do you think so many people are upset that you are going to school? Be as descriptive as possible as you illustrate the entire experience in your letter.

Students should then read the passage "The Cold War" and complete the questions. We have attached an answer key. After completing this, students will learn about the space race between the USSR and the USA by watching the attached video. Have a great week!

This wall divided Germany between the free side and the communist side. If you lived on the communist side, you were trapped for decades. Now it is time to read the passage "The Cold War" (PDF) and complete the questions(PDF). After completing this, you will learn about the space race between the USSR and the USA by watching the attached video.
