Students have finished reading The Giver by Lois Lowry in which a community's attempt to create a perfect society reveals that there is a price to pay for such "perfection". Students will create their own perfect society or Utopia by completing the tasks in the Keynote.
 
Student Instructions
Now that you have read The Giver by Lois Lowry, you should have an understanding that one person's definition of a perfect society can be different from another person's idea of a perfect society. The idea of a perfect society, known as Utopia, can quickly turn in to the opposite, known as Dystopia. Use critical thinking and planning to design your own Utopia by completing the tasks in the Keynote. Submit as instructed by your teacher's weekly email update.

Use model beaks and attempt to recreate how a bird eats in a small scale demonstration of adaptations. Think about how a bird's beak relates to its prey. You will see how easy it is to pick up each item with each “beak”. You will have 30 secs to pick up as many of one type of food as you can with the beak you chose. Then another 30 sec to try and pick up a different food item with that beak. Ultimately keeping track of how much you collect. Email the completed lab activity to your teacher or upload in Curve.
