my name is Katie McCain and I'm d612 instructional supervisor here in Bartlett city schools and seven years ago when we started our district we also wanted to have an Honors Academy to recognize for their efforts academics and as productive members of society I always start with this quote education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the and the world can have many different and definitions and can be a child's world of families world the community For The World At Large I'm in this is one of the first steps that you can take in your high school career to really start making that change the Bartlett Honors Academy is designed for students who are passionate about learning Honors Academy students have a unique opportunity to acquire a cat skills in preparation for college through an increased involvement and honors dual enrollment dual-credit state if you are working with your counselors or will and then few weeks to start working on a 4-year plan and want to just make sure that we understand a difference in all of these courses honors courses are offered in all 4 years so 9 through 12 you can take honors they are available in everything from band to stem Social Studies English mass and everything in between I just at the Freshman Academy alone there are 18 different on courses that you can pick from 1012 campus mule have increased opportunity to take the rest of the day exactly what it says you will be enrolled in two different different schools so you're enrolled at Bartlett High School as well as the University of Memphis for most of our course as long as you successfully passed the core you get that college credit with dual credit and Statewide dual credit again you're enrolled in multiple places and a lot of our dual credit courses we work with community colleges in Statewide dual-credit we offer a few courses through the state of Tennessee without Statewide dual-credit you have to take a test at the end and make a passing score to receive that credit do we have advanced placement courses there are 17 different advanced placement courses and you can start those in your sophomore year but then when you get into your Junior and see so you're there increase offerings 480 again everything from music theory to ELA I'm so there should be something for everyone advanced placement courses are recognized Across the Nation test at the end and it's scored out of five most schools if you make up three four or five will give you that college credit you will need to start researching just to make sure or 5 depending on what school that you I want to attend one of the advantages in your advanced placement courses is did it's accepted Nationwide some of your dual enrollment dual credit courses they may not be accepted out of the state of Tennessee so as you start to think at what college you want to attend that something that you'll want to keep in mind am I going outside of the state of Tennessee should I select more advanced placement courses or I know that I want to go to the University of Memphis so I'm going to do dual enrollment and dual-credit counselors will be able to walk through that with you Carter's Academy you also get opportunities for leadership skills through Community Service as well as a project of impact that you complete during your senior year the college freshman typically take about 30 hours maybe more maybe less throughout their freshman year classes that you would take that we just discussed the dual enrollment AP dual-credit Statewide do credits those are all called episodes so early post-secondary opportunity courses there's also a ton of certifications that you can get more through more so in your Career and Technical courses Machining cosmetology criminal justice Health Science there's different certifications that you can get in those classes they also earn you college credit so throughout the next four years if you take just 10 of the many opportunities that you have time to take a nap so so our apt do credits you could completely crap CLEP out of your freshman year while you're still in high school how many of you were going to say what does that mean how does that help me well you can graduate in 4 years so it won't take extra year of school which is going to also save you a ton of money at the U of M just for tuition for your freshman year it's almost $10,000 so you can save $10,000 by taking just 10 these courses throughout your high school career MTSU is around the same just over $9,000 if you're sinking I want to go somewhere like Christian Brothers it's almost $34,000 just for your freshman year I'm so as you can see this this is a math test with easy answers it's going to save me money as well as time a lot of people will wonder is this the right fit for me should I apply for the Academy if you're looking for a program to challenge and distinguish yourself from other students through academics and Community leadership the answer is absolutely yes inbar dishonors Academy is the only way for you to graduate with an honors diploma and counselors will start talking to you even though you're in 8th grade about college applications you're going to need a way to set yourself apart from other students I'm in this is one way that you can start right now to set yourself apart are you looking for opportunities to increase your leadership organizational and time management skills yes the Honors Academy is a right fit for you one thing I do I want you all to keep in mind I'm the Honors Academy is open to Ace graders so if you are at all thinking that you might want to be a part of the Honors Academy I encourage you to go ahead and apply if you don't apply during your eyes right here we really don't open the application process again unless you're a transfer student or there's some extenuating circumstances as to why you didn't apply during your 8th grade year I'm so if you're thinking you might be interested I would go ahead and up you can always decide later on that maybe this isn't the best fit for you no harm no fowl you can drop the Honors Academy at any time but you can't get in at any time so go ahead and apply there is some specific requirements for academic and service if you are accepted into the Honors Academy and your four years of high school you do have to complete 14 honors unit any honors or Joel enrollment course and semester advanced placement course will our new one unit towards those 14 year-long advanced placement courses count for 1.5 and you have to have a minimum of three honors units each year that you're enrolled in so you can do three honors courses you could do to advance but you do have to have at least three each year you must maintain a minimum of a 3.5 weighted GPA and you do complete 12 service hours each year we're very specific on where you earn those service hours and that we three of them to be tomorrow at City Schools we believe that the Honors Academy students should impact their school the school system and their community at large so we do ask some of them to be to Bartlett and the rest of them are really up to you if there's something at your church that you enjoy doing it you want to volunteer at the animal shelter and we also work to get you those opportunities and I'm so we will search for different service opportunities and share those with students we usually don't have any issue he's with people are in the 12 hours at some of you are probably already a part of the Beta Club or Honor Society where you have to earn service hours same thing will be true in high school we do allow you to double dip so if you had to earn 10 hours for Beta Club you can also count those hours for Honors Academy or Key Club interact Honor Society we do allow those service that works to count for Honors Academy as well as that other club maybe a part of during your senior year you do complete a project of impact we really start talking about that when you're a junior you select a mentor that's made a difference in your education through Bartlett High School when your junior year and then we'll start picking some sort of a topic they can range from anything you're interested in we have had some that are informational so maybe about fostering a child or about something with the deaf community so we've had everything from that to recycling working with teachers to figure out what their needs are something that they could do to Empire I'm right now our senior classes has a group of students that are receiving kind of a positive message every morning to see if we can impact mental health of the students right now so that was there and we really start talking about during your junior year so the applications opened on February 8th and you will have until March 22nd to finish your application every part of the application is online so it's an electronic process you do have to get teacher recommendations they are also completed electronically so you need to make sure on your application that you enter the teachers email address correctly once you enter that email address they will be sent a teacher recommendation form and that form will come right back to us there are three different components of the application there's application itself or just in general mation you do need three teacher recommendation and then you will do a digital writing sample will talk about your props for that digital writing sample and just a second and then at the bottom here there's the ad Honors Academy website when you go to this website you will see everything from a flyer a brochure frequently asked questions and you'll see the application link and you'll have me information if you need to reach out with any questions before or after you submit all of my information is on this page as well set the digital writing sample doesn't have to just be an essay, if you're comfortable writing essays and that's what you really enjoy an essay is perfect if you would rather make a key notes or do a voice-over of a keynote like I've done here GarageBand really the options are endless with how you answer one of these two Quest if you could study one subject in school that wasn't offered what would it be and why you started looking at course selection so you know what is offered in our non through 12 settings is there something that you really wish you could take but it wasn't one of the options that's what we will need to address with the first question for the second question if you could only speak twenty words for the rest of your life what words would head your list and why I'm a game you just have to pick one of these two prompts to address in any digital way that you see fit I so why would you want to be a part of the Honors Academy be well prepared for post-secondary this is your only opportunity to graduate with honors distinction and you'll surround yourself
