Students should access BrainPop and search for a short video lesson on "Context Clues." Students should watch the video. Students should be able to log in through their Clever account. Students should then take the quiz and complete the worksheet activity that accompanies it. Students may need access to a dictionary either on-line or hard copy. Please review answers with your child. Students will then log into www.iXL.com or enter through Clever (whichever way your child's school accesses it.) Go to Fifth Grade Language Arts. Scroll to the vocabulary section and find EE Context Clues and practice EE3 (Use context to identify the meaning of a word). Begin the lesson. (If they answer incorrectly, scroll to the bottom of the page and it will give an explanation and an example.)

Activity 1:Print off the pdf pages, if you wish, or allow the student to work the problems while looking at the screen. Look to the answer pdf if more guidance is needed. Use the Illustrative Mathematics link to apply what has been practiced. For enrichment, ask the student to create a problem using at least three different operations and two sets of grouping symbols wherein the answer would be 12, 16, 21, 33, 76, etc.
 
Activity 2:Students must show their work. You can print out the lessons or use notebook paper to solve the problems. These lessons require students to use the strategy PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication or Division, Adding or Subtraction) to solve the problems. Available with this lesson: Student reteach and enrich worksheets for extra practice.

Activity 1:Work the example problems from GoMath Lesson 1-12 and the problems assigned. Remember to follow either PEMDAS or GMDAS (whichever your teacher taught you). Show what you know by completing the task from Illustrative Mathematics.
 
Activity 2:Complete the Share and Show problems for each lesson: Even Numbers Only Lesson 11, Algebra-Evaluate Numerical Expressions. Lesson 12, Algebra-Grouping Symbols. Complete the reteach/ enrich worksheets for Lessons 3 and 10, if extra practice is needed.

Student Instructions
Activity 1:Read the Readworks selection 'Journey to the Stars' and complete the questions at the end of the passage. Then, to view constellations, cut out each of the circles on the dash line. With parents help, use a push pin to press through each of the stars. Placing a constellation circle on the end of an empty cardboard roll, tape down, and then view through the other end what constellations look like. (If it is dark, you may use a flashlight to shine through the one end of the cardboard roll.) Gently rotate the cardboard roll as you are looking through it to show what is happening with a constellation as the earth rotates. Then repeat the process with the other constellation circles.
 
Activity 2:
You can log on to Generation Genius or Read through the materials on sun and other stars. Answers the review questions on movie/ reading materials. You can do the DYI activity, which is making a planisphere or you can use this website of planisphere to see the stars that would be in your night sky. https://skyandtelescope.org/interactive-sky-chart/ Then go outside with parents at night and see if you can find one of the constellations.

Our sun is a star of average size and brightness. Stars come in different sizes and distances from Earth. Stars that are farther away appear smaller and dimmer.

Parents, your child should go to Clever and choose Social Studies Weekly. Once there, choose the Grade 5 icon and then go to week 9. You will be reading about Pearl Harbor to review how the U.S. was impacted by the bombing by the Japanese military. Read the Readworks passage titled "Pearl Harbor" and answer the questions from the text. You can print out the passage, or just write your responses on paper after reading online. Question 7 states, "What did President Roosevelt do once he heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor?" Log into Seesaw and write a response to this question PLUS add on what you would have done if you had been the president at that time. Would you have done the same thing? Why or why not?

Next, students will learn about the sinking of the Lusitania by visiting the "Sinking the Lusitania" link. Students may read this on their own, or they may access the "recorded reading" tab at the bottom of the page. After reading, click on the word "quiz" which is a link to take a 10 question quiz.The site grades the quiz & shows the correct answers. Finally, students will watch a video (see link) about the decoding of the Zimmerman telegram. Of course. we hope this will lead them to make their own secret code. You may print off the PDF "Make your own...) or students may use their own paper.The message should relate to WWI and begin with the words "Top Secret" in code. Make sure all words are spelled correctly and proper grammar is used. Post it on your teacher's Seesaw page, and challenge classmates to solve it! Examples of a code A= J, B= K. ... or A=1, B=2.Please see the bonus activities we've included in comments. Hang in there! You are amazing!

Good times are ahead! Begin by going to the link called "WW1 Trenches" and take a virtual tour of the WW1 museum. Next. go to the link named "Sinking the Lusitania". You may choose the "recorded reading" option at the bottom of the page. There is a quiz you will take by pressing the word "quiz" located under the article. The site will show you your score and the correct items when you finish. The last thing you will do is watch a video "The Zimmerman Telegram". You will get there by clicking on the link provided. Now it is time for you to be the secret agent! The PDF "Make your own secret code" will help get you started. Write a message about World War 1 in your secret code. It must begin with the words "Top Secret" written in code and be signed by you (in code). It is very important that you use proper punctuation and spelling for your message. Send it to your teacher to post on Seesaw or to a friend. Can they crack your code? Bonus activities are included in comments. If you get bored, design your own trench system with Legos or things around the house. Have fun! Examples of a code A= J, B=K. or A = 1.
