Parent Instructions
The Rocket Activity Instructions contain a link to a youtube video demonstrating how to make and fly paper rockets using household items to include a drinking straw. Below is a materials list. But, making do with what is available is definitely perfection. Material Required: • Two pieces of paper • Scissors • Pencil • Drinking straw • Scotch tape • Ruler • Clear space in which to launch your "rockets," such as a large room, hallway or outdoor area with no wind • Measuring tape (optional) The goal is for the students to decide on a design element and try three prototypes with this element changed. Perform several trials and evaluate how the design change affected rocket performance. Then, write up a reflection and share it with me and perhaps peers in a Zoom video conference.

Student Instructions
Using the attached files, watch the YouTube video, read and follow the instructions to test paper rocket prototypes. Evaluate the design changes and write up a reflection on rocket performance to share with me and possibly your peers. The attached Soda Straw Rocket Data form is an example that is measuring the performance in distant and the effect of variations to the nose cone. Your datasheet will most likely be different as you may want to change the number of fins, shape or sizes of fins. Feel free to repeat this activity and test different design variations.

Learning Opportunity Objective
STEM I Objective: 11 Design and develop several solution prototypes, conduct feasibility testing, and use the data to justify the solution selected.

Comments
Remember, this is optional and is not for a grade. However, it is a great way to practice the EDP model, collect data, and analyze results. If we have enough interest, perhaps, you can even have a Zoom video conference with your teacher to discuss and share your results. Have fun and be safe.
