Parents, Please review the instructions at the top of the sheet with your child. After reading the passage, the student should begin completing the chart at the bottom of the page. Encourage your child to use context clues in the passage. For example, what clue in the passage tells us what sweltering might mean (summer)? Once your child has completed the assignment, you may check over his/her work with the attached answer key.

Science Week 2

Parent Instructions
Students will cut out the silhouette of their choosing and glue it to the shadow sundial page. Students will take their silhouettes outside at different times each day, or shine a flashlight on their silhouettes at different heights and from different directions. Students will make observations about the shadows their silhouettes make, and record data about the direction and length of their shadows. Students will make as many observations as weather permits and record their conclusions about what they observed as the lengths and heights of their shadows changed.
 
Student Instructions
Using the silhouette template, cut out the silhouette of your choice. Glue the feet of your silhouette to the sundial page. With your shadow observation page and shadow data chart, and parent's permission/supervision, go outside at different times during the day. If you are unable to go outside, shine a flashlight on your silhouette from different directions and at different heights. Set your sundial page on the ground with the house side of the sheet facing your house or apartment. Record the length and direction of your shadow on the data chart. Record your observations on the observation sheet. What did you notice about the length and direction of your shadow at different times of the day?

We have used both the printed and online versions throughout the school year. Each week contains articles, videos, and captions that explain historical events related to the era. Students will now access Studies Weekly using their Clever username and password. This week the students will read Week 24. Students are instructed to read the articles, watch the videos, and pay close attention to the captions found throughout the lesson. They will then complete the end of the lesson activities. (Think and Review and the Crossword Puzzle).
