Students will use the NASA Earth Observations analysis tool to explore changing albedo in the Arctic compared with other areas of Earth. This is a NASA web-based tool that navigates data. Students should notice that the northernmost areas experience a greater variation. These are areas that have cycles of ice growth and melt throughout the seasons. Students will track data on the Student Worksheet and answer questions about the data.

Student Instructions
Download and print if possible, the "Explore Albedo Values Student Worksheet". Navigate the NASA data web page, link on "Albedo Ice Melt Real-World Analysis", follow the instruction on the PDF and collect and document the data as directed. Reflect on the data collected and answer the reflection questions. Main Point: Does the data show an environmental condition that requires action? Consider: Are their Scientists and Engineers that can solve these issues if action is required?

Learning Opportunity Objective
13) Conduct research to create a list of problems that are considered major global challenges.

Comments
Albedo (al-bee-doh) is a measure of how much light that hits a surface is reflected without being absorbed. Something that appears white reflects most of the light that hits it and has a high albedo, while something that looks dark absorbs most of the light that hits it, indicating a low albedo Ice has a high albedo. As it melts, the albedo decreases. This leads to changes in albedo in the Arctic as the seasons change. Areas over land such as Africa and the mainland US experience less change because the reflectivity of the land does not change as much as the melting ice.
