Parent Instructions
Your student will use IXL to practice one skill this week: E2: Identify the narrative point of view. Some students have an account already set up through their school, but IXL is free to all students during this time, so an account is not necessary. Most students should aim for a SMART score of 80 or higher, but we understand that this is not an appropriate goal for all students. Student in exceptional language arts should attempt to achieve a SMART score of 90. Students who struggle in language arts should stop after 30 minutes even if they have not achieved a score of 80. At the end of the practice session, students without accounts should take a screen shot of their final score and email it to their ELA teacher.

Student Instructions
If you have an IXL account through your school, please log in. Otherwise, you may just go to IXL.com. Click on “Learning” and then “Language Arts.” Under 6th grade, practice the following skill: E2: Identify the narrative point of view. Practice until you achieve a SMART score of 80 OR until you have practiced for 30 minutes. If you have an IXL account, your teacher will be able to see the work you have done; if you don’t have an account, send a screen shot of your final score to your teacher.

Learning Opportunity Objective
After reading a short passage, the student will identity the point of view of the narrator.

Comments
IXL is able to be customized for students. Exceptional students, for example, may practice the exact same skill at the 7th or even 8th grade level. Please email your ELA teacher with specific questions.

Isaac Asimov's short story, "The Fun They Had" - Attached

Parent Instructions
Parents and Guardians, this activity should be a little more fun and creative for the kids. The goal here is to show a scene from the story from the point of view of one particular character in the story. The trick is to make it obvious whose eyes are seeing the scene. That can be a bit hard. Students should create a scene the way a particular character would see it. Sometimes including the characters hands or objects they are holding helps make that more realistic. I have attached some ideas from a story we read in class to help give them the idea. They can draw out this scene on paper or they can use a computer illustration program like storyboard or procreate (iPad) if they prefer. Encourage them to sketch out the idea lightly first (in case they make any mistakes) and then go back and darken the lines and add color.

Student Instructions
Students, here is your chance to let your creative talents shine. Attached you will find a copy of the short story by Isaac Asimov called, "The Fun They Had." Your job is to illustrate a scene from this story from the point of view of one of the following characters: Margie, Tommy, the repairman, or the teacher. Be sure to make it obvious when point of view you are taking. There are several good scenes to choose from. You could choose a classroom scene, the scene where the two kids are reading the book, or even the scene where the repairman is called out to do the repair. The trick is to make it obvious whose eyes are seeing this scene. Sometimes it helps to draw the characters hands, or items they are holding in your illustration. Basically, if the character had a tiny camera in his/her eye, what would the picture it takes look like?

Learning Opportunity Objective
The students will read the short story "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov and create an illustration that specifically shows a particular character's point of view.

Comments
This should be a fun activity. Everyone has different levels of creativity, and even if you are not a great illustrator, you should be able to get the basic idea across pretty well. If you need reference materials (something to look at to draw some part of your picture) feel free to image search. Most illustrators refer to something when drawing. We want you to have fun with this!

Please encourage your child to show their work on a scratch sheet of paper. If your child makes mistakes, that is okay. We learn by making mistakes. There are links to the Khan Academy videos in the student directions if your child needs a refresher on combining like terms.

Student Instructions
Hello wonderful students! This week you are focusing on combining like terms. This is a crucial skill that you will see this skill for the remainder of your math career and there are many real-life connections to this skill. For this activity, you will complete 3 digital mazes on a PowerPoint. Look at the first maze as a warm-up maze, the second maze as an on-level maze, and the third maze as more of a challenge! To complete the maze, just drag the arrow from the PPT that matches the direction of the correct answer to get you to your next problem and continue to work your way to the finish. Remember, to work your problems out on a scratch sheet of paper. Once you have completed the maze, take a screenshot and send it to your teacher. You may wish to visit these Khan Academy videos if you need a refresher on this skill. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/x2f8bb11595b61c86 https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-sixth-grade-math/cc-6th-expressions-and-variables/cc-6th-combining-like-terms/v/combining-like-terms-1

Parents, you can help your child by making sure they understand the difference between Ancient and Modern Olympics. When we use the word Ancient, we are describing the times on the BC/BCE timeline, think the earliest games When we use the word Modern for the Olympics, we are thinking more about the games that have taken place within the past 50 years or so.

Your task: Create a list of ten sentences which show how the original Ancient Olympic Games are different from those today. You can use pages to write a list, or if you are feeling creative and want to include pictures, you may use Keynote.
